Turn food colorings and a few basic craft supplies into a thrifty Christmas card. The card is easy to make, yet the end result is very colorful and bright. You can make one, or make a few of them for all your neighbors. It can also be a great project that the kids can help mom with.
Total Time: 20 minutes
Yield: one Christmas card
Supplies:
- 5.6 x 8.2 in cerulean blue cardstock
- 5.4 x 3.7 in white textured cardstock
- A5 sized ordinary white printer paper
- 20 in of silver ribbon, 0.4" wide
- 20 in of silver ribbon, 0.3" wide
- 0.4" wide silver bell
- two drops each of the following food colorings: red, green, blue and yellow
- black jumbo crayon
- Pilot silver marker pen
- paintbrush
- standard scissors
- pencil
- ruler
- quick-drying craft glue (such as Bostik Clear)
Steps:
- Use the pencil and ruler to lightly draw rhombus shapes onto the piece of A5 paper.
- Use the ruler and crayon to draw over each pencil line.
- Use the food colorings to color the shapes. Do not dilute the food colorings with water. In the first row, alternate between red and blue rhombi, and in the second, alternate between green and yellow rhombi, followed by red and blue again, etc. Allow to dry thoroughly.
- Use the silver pen to draw over the crayon lines.
- Score the cerulean blue cardstock to create a card sized 5.6" x 4.1".
- Cut a piece sized 5.4" x 3.7" from the paper with the colored rhombi. With the fold at the left, centre and glue it to the front of the card.
- Take the white textured cardstock and cut out the inside, leaving a space of 0.3" from the outer edges of this piece to make a "frame." Centre and glue the frame to the front of the card.
- Take the two ribbons and use both together to make a silver bow. Neatly cut the ends of the bow and then glue the bow to the front of the card.
- Glue the bell to the centre of the bow.

Hi there! Yes, you certainly can use gel pens. I only used food colors because the end result is so bold, but gel pens will also make a great card.
