front view of the finished projectIn about 30 or 45 minutes, you can make this Lil' Shaker Angel. See how easy they are to create and how many different things you can make them with. They are great for stocking stuffers or the Christmas Bazaars that will pop up before you know it!

Total Time: 30-45 minutes

Yield: 1

Steps:

  1. Determine what you want in the shaker. You will see later just how much you can use. My first one was red hot peppers.
  2. small shaker spice bottler filled with red pepper flakes from a larger container

  3. If you use the dollar store ping pong balls, make sure the seam is where the ears would be so it's not showing once the hair is glued on.
  4. Glue on the head by putting the hot glue around the rim of the shaker and not the head. This is important if you want a face on it. If you do, it's easier to put the face on in your hand and not when it's been attached. Once it is, it's easy to get the face just a bit off and you would have to remove the head, clean off the glue and hope you can get it just right.
  5. ball head affixed to top of jar

  6. For the wings, I crocheted a heart out of one of the colors in the peppers. You can do it any color, but I think a matching color works well.
  7. Chain 2 with a J hook and single crochet into the first chain. Chain one and turn. Make a single in that first stitch (the last one before you turned) and make one in each to the end. This stitch will increase your heart base by one each time.
  8. partially finished crochet wings

  9. It is very important that your last row on the base is uneven. This means you have a center stitch and each of these two halves have a center. I recommend 9. In the 3rd stitch from the hook, make a double crochet and 7 more doubles in the same stitch. Attach to the 5th stitch and from that stitch do the same. So you have a beginning at stitch 9 to stitch 7 (the center of the first heart mound), then attaching that to stitch 5. From there, repeat to stitch 7 and then ending on stitch 9. Break off and work in both tails.
  10. scallops added to edge of wings

  11. To make the tuft of hair, measure out about 30" of the yarn and keep folding to get about 3" and cut all folds. Using one as the center, lay the others on top of it and tie it letting the ends blend in with the others. Glue it onto the top of the head.
  12. small bundle of cut yard tied together to make the hair

  13. With your raffia or yarn, ribbon, etc, make your neck tie and glue on a button or flower. Then, lay your angel down and glue on the wings. They should come to about 3/4" above the "shoulders" and below the top of the head.
  14. bottle with wings and hair attached

  15. You can also glue the shaker cap onto the angel's head.

  17. As you can see, you can make these with things other than spices, too. I am showing you beans, peas, rice, cereal, herbs, and such. You can also use craft supplies like pearls, beads, flowers, fabric, gems, and much more. I hope you have a good time making these. They can each have enough personality to even name them! N-JOY!
  18. an array of spice bottles filled with other things such as buttons

So you can plan your yields, each spice makes 2 angels, unless you get the bigger ones then it's way more. Each package of ping pong balls gives you 8 so that is a real bargain. The shakers are 2/1.00 so that is the same as the regular sized spices. I also get odd shakers in sets and singles at thrift stores. They can be a bit "knobby" but have to be clear. The rest you either have at home or purchase cheap. I hope this helps.
