Store Christmas Lights In Box

I used to decorate with hundreds of strings of lights. I found the best way to store them was this: Take any cardboard box, the size is up to what you think you can handle. Put a string of lights in the bottom. You don't have to do any fancy rolling or anything. Then put a layer of 1 sheet of newspaper on top of them, hopefully covering the full size of the box. Then keep layering the lights and newspaper until you fill the box and feel comfortable handling it.

The trick is to cover the strand completely with a layer of newspaper so the light layer can't interact with any other layer. When taking them out the next year, the strands will not be intertwined with each other. Not only that, it makes them easier to check for outages.
