Make Baker's Clay Ornaments?

When I was in elementary school a parent made dough ornaments shaped in our names. Does anyone know how these were made?

Are you thinking about dough art? If so, use the following:

4 cups flour
2 cups salt
Approx 2 cups water

Mix flour & salt with fork in a large mixing bowl. Then add water. Knead dough with hands until it is fairly stiff. Work directly on cookie sheet. After shaping, add a loop of wire stuck into the top of the dough then bake at 300 degrees F for at least one hour. After baking, you can paint them and dip or spray them with varnish or polyurethane.

I make a flour base dough and have my grandchildren make their own ornaments using food coloring for paint then we bake them. We put colorful yarn through them to be hung on the tree. They are baked on a very low temp. Before baking them we use a straw to make the hole in the top. Each child's ornament is dated and their name is put on the back this will start their collection of ornaments for when they become adults.

Editor's Note: Here's a Baker's Clay recipe

Baker's Clay Ingredients:

* 3 1/2 cups flour

* 1 cup salt

* 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 cup water

Mix ingredients together in a large bowl and knead until smooth.

Add food coloring if desired. Make shapes and bake at 300 degrees
until set and golden (1/2 hr to 1 hr).

For a more golden appearance, paint with a beaten egg when it is almost
done baking and looks dry. You can paint with egg twice or three times for
a darker golden color. Don't use the egg on colored dough. For colored
dough, paint with shellac or lacquer after baking. If cracks appear, patch
with some slightly moister dough and continue baking.
