A Little Holiday Entertainment Planning Goes Long Way

We have all heard this our entire lives: plan ahead. It's actually a good idea at any time of year, but in this run up to Thanksgiving and Christmas, this is a good time to look to the little things so they don't become big things. Here are some examples:

  • Are you planning on using grandma's silver flatware? Now is the time to polish it and put away with tarnish preventing strips, in a silverware case, or simply wrapped in cling wrap.

  • Fill your salt and pepper shakers, especially if you have ones that are dragged out only when company arrives. Make sure the salt is free flowing, as it can clump. Do you really want to do this as people are gathering for Thanksgiving dinner? Didn't think so.

  • Prep any table linens early too. Many are no iron now, but a special vintage one might need some attention. Not what you want to discover on Thanksgiving or Christmas morning. Get them ready and hang on a pant hanger.

  • Roasting and baking soon? Run the self clean feature on your oven. If you don't have that, then do it the old fashioned way with elbow grease. Short on time? Do one side a night after work if you are doing the scrubbing.

  • Now is a good time to clean out your fridge. Discard any outdated items and give the interior a good cleaning. There will soon be a traffic jam in there-make some room! Your turkey and casseroles will thank you later.

  • Plan for leftovers! What are they going into? The dollar store has 3 packs of rectangular foil trays with covers that are perfect for sending food home with family and friends. And the shape is great for fitting into the fridge.

I'm sure there are other things that you will think of once you have read my thoughts. You might have special dinnerware that would need to be washed, or a centerpiece that needs attention. Anything that can be done ahead is one less thing to cause stress on the day of your gathering. Remember to enjoy the holidays, not endure them!
